”…They shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord,
over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and over the young of the flock and the herd;
their life shall become like a watered garden,
…and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty,
says the Lord.”     –Jeremiah 37:12–14

I was impressed this morning as the hosts of “The Today Show” talked about New Year’s resolutions. Ann Curry shared that hers is to begin each morning with a prayer of thanks for a new day to be alive and to work for good in the world (my paraphrase). Probably something of a rare statement for a popular personality to make on network TV.

I wish to follow in her footsteps, focusing on what I have to be grateful for each day, rather than on what I lack. I pray that my example will also rub off on my kids. The 6-year-old is already expressing desire for “more” toys, so soon after the unwrapping of Christmas and birthday gifts with which he was — make no mistake — initially absolutely delighted. I know this is typical of a kindergartner’s nature, but so many of us never grow out of it, and it becomes the mantra of our adulthood as well: “I wish I had…”; “If only…”

Lord, help me to be satisfied with your bounty, each and every day of this new year.
