Heidi… and Fred Who??

Heidi: proud copy editor of ‘FRED WHO?’

Last fall I had the amazing opportunity to interview a real live presidential candidate for my work with the e-magazine, 10,000 Couples. I was soooooo nervous as the time drew near for our conversation over the internet! But Mr. Fred Karger, a lesser-known moderate Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency, was absolutely wonderful! He was such fun to talk to, easy-going, generous with his time, very down-to-earth, and had no “agenda” whatsoever — which is to say, he did not seem compelled to twist any question I asked so he could say whatever he wanted to say, even if it had nothing to do with the question. So, you see… not at all like the typical candidate for public office.

In preparation for our interview, I had purchased and read the book Fred wrote with co-author Steve Fiffer. (BTW, I started out calling him “Mr. Karger,” but he insisted I call him “Fred.” I said, “OK, but when you win, I will call you ‘President Karger’!”) At the time, the book, Fred Who?: Political Insider to Outsider, was only out in e-format, so I read it on my Kindle. Ever the editor, though I loved the book’s content, I couldn’t help but notice a missing word here, an extra word there, a few typos. Nothing major, but it’s in my blood to want to help people make their written communication as close to perfect as possible — especially people I’ve gotten to know and like! So, after our interview, I asked Fred if I could please have permission to do a final copy edit on the book before it went to print for the softcover version, and he (and his co-author) graciously said yes.

The final product is what I’m holding in my hand in the photo above. It’s been on my bookshelf for half a year now, but Fred and I have stayed in touch, and he recently sent me the matching “Fred Who?” t-shirt I’m wearing and a “Fred Who?” Frisbee, which I forgot to include in the shot — oops!), so I thought it would be fun to take a picture!

If you haven’t heard of Fred Karger, and are actually asking yourself, “Fred who???”… go to the Fred Karger for President website, visit the Fred Karger YouTube channel, and check him out! He knows it’ll take a lot to pull me away from President Obama (we’ve discussed this), but Fred is like no other Republican you’ve ever heard of, and he deserves a listen. Besides, his book is insightful and peppered with a delightfully dry sense of humor. Definitely worth a read!
